How is Kratom grown and produced?

The Kratom tree is a native plant from Southeast Asia that grows in Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. The best and most stable source for a safe logistics chain and high-quality Kratom is Indonesia. However, there are many suppliers, so it’s crucial to inspect them and find the serious and major players.

We take a closer look at the process of Kratom production in Borneo, Indonesia. It consists of the following 7 steps:

  1. Farming/Wild
When kratom is farmed, the trees in Borneo’s plantation grow in an environmentally friendly and protective environment with rich soil. The tropical climate and perfect weather in West Borneo ensure that the leaves contain the correct set of substances. We also sell wild kratom that grows wild in rainforests, whereby the local people and our supplier take good care of the environment to promote good quality.
  2. Harvesting
Farmers possess high skills and long experience as their work is a major factor in producing different strains. Farmers harvest Kratom leaves by hand-picking and inspecting each leaf to ensure that they are at the correct maturity level – harvesting at the right time is the method for categorizing them as White, Green, or Red vein. Contrary to all online rumors, Kratom trees do not produce a specific leaf color. Instead, each Kratom tree produces a range of white, green, and red-veined Kratom leaves, all on the same tree. As the Kratom tree ages and matures, the veins in the Kratom leaf change colors. The plant’s pharmacology, compounds, and properties are said to change in concentration in the leaves as the plant ages.
  3. Washing
After washing, the leaves are dried one by one until all dirt is removed. The farmers dry the leaves in a hygienic controlled indoor environment.
  4. Drying
The drying process is a major factor in determining the color and quality of the Kratom powder. Indoor drying is fan-supported in large, dark storage rooms to keep the leaves from being exposed to direct sunlight. Industrial fans are used to circulate indoor air and to drive out moisture as the leaves dry. Indoor drying requires careful attention to detail and focus on sanitation – if this is not done correctly, mold can develop.

Outdoor drying involves spreading the leaves out in thin layers and leaving them to the mercy of the elements for 1-3 days. Sunlight kills mold and is usually the cleaner and easier drying process (but not always). Weather conditions must be monitored and the leaves must be stirred periodically for consistent exposure to sunlight.
  5. Fermentation
Instead of being immediately sent for drying, some freshly harvested Kratom leaves will be packed into sackcloth bags and left to ferment in a dark indoor environment.

Fermentation is applied more often to the Red Kratom leaves, but any vein category can be a candidate for this. This step modifies somewhat the biomolecular composition of the Kratom leaf, which modifies the set and profile of properties and substances.

Fermentation literally converts the density and proportions of the naturally occurring phytochemicals found in the Kratom plant. But because the fermentation step takes more time and effort to handle, fermented Kratom strains are marketed at higher prices compared to non-fermented Kratom strains.

Kratom leaf fermentation usually lasts between 24-72 hours. After this time has passed, the fermented leaves are allowed to dry indoors or outdoors, depending on the manufacturer’s preferences.
  6. Grinding
When the leaves are dried, they are crushed and ground into a fine powder in machines inside the factory. Here, a UV sterilizer is used (by our suppliers) to prevent any contamination from microorganisms. However, we have an agreement with our suppliers to grind the leaves only after they receive a new order from us – this is to ensure quality and freshness.
  7. Lab Testing
Afterwards, the fine powder is tested to ensure that it contains the right chemical profile for good quality and that it is safe from Salmonella, E. Coli, and yeast and mold.
  8. Packaging
After third-party verification, the powder is packaged with care for hygiene before it is shipped to us. The packaging is done with an air vacuum process to ensure that the product’s quality and color remain the same for a longer period.
